Choosing the Right ADA Hand Dryer
The best ADA hand dryer depends on the restroom and the installation. In many projects, a shallow surface-mounted dryer is the simplest solution. In others, recessing a deeper dryer such as the XLERATOR may make more sense. We recommend starting with the facility requirements first, then choosing the dryer that fits them.
What Makes a Hand Dryer ADA Compliant?
There is no single hand dryer dimension that determines ADA compliance by itself. The finished installation matters.
One of the most important requirements for wall-mounted hand dryers comes from the ADA rules for protruding objects. Objects with leading edges more than 27 inches and not more than 80 inches above the finished floor or ground may protrude no more than 4 inches horizontally into a circulation path.
Wall projection
Shallow dryers can make it easier to stay within the 4-inch protrusion limit where that requirement applies.
Accessible reach
Required operable parts must be located within applicable ADA reach ranges. For an unobstructed forward or side reach, the maximum high reach is generally 48 inches.
Clear floor space
Users need the appropriate accessible approach and clear floor or ground space where required.
Correct installation
A dryer marketed for ADA applications still needs to be installed according to applicable accessibility requirements and the manufacturer's instructions.
A 4-Inch Dryer Is Not Automatically an ADA-Compliant Installation
The 4-inch rule applies to certain objects protruding into circulation paths. Mounting location, accessible reach, clear floor space and the complete restroom layout still matter.
Surface-Mounted ADA Hand Dryers
For many projects, a shallow surface-mounted dryer is the easiest solution because it avoids cutting into the wall. Several of the commercial dryers we recommend most often are designed specifically with shallow wall profiles.

World Dryer VERDEdri
The World Dryer VERDEdri is one of our favorite choices when a traditional hands-under dryer and shallow wall profile are priorities. It combines ADA-oriented surface mounting with HEPA filtration and adjustable performance.
Between VERDEdri and SLIMdri, we generally recommend VERDEdri when the budget allows. SLIMdri remains a useful lower-cost choice, but VERDEdri is the more complete modern dryer in our experience.
Dyson Airblade V HU02
The Dyson Airblade V HU02 is our primary Dyson recommendation for many busy commercial restrooms. Dyson specifies the HU02 at exactly 4 inches deep and identifies the model as ADA compliant. It combines that shallow profile with HEPA filtration and Dyson's high-speed Airblade drying technology.
Excel Dryer ThinAir
The Excel Dryer ThinAir is the natural Excel Dryer option when you want a shallow surface-mounted design rather than recessing an XLERATOR.

If the project does not require a specific dryer model, compare shallow surface-mounted options first. They can often simplify an ADA-conscious installation by avoiding recess kits and wall modification.
Recessed Hand Dryers and Retrofit Options
A dryer does not necessarily need a shallow cabinet to work in an accessible restroom. Recessing part of a deeper dryer into the wall can reduce the amount of the unit that projects beyond the finished surface.
XLERATOR With a Recess Kit
The Excel Dryer XLERATOR is a common example. The standard XLERATOR cabinet projects farther from the wall than today's shallow-profile dryers, but compatible recess solutions can reduce the exposed projection.
If your project specifically calls for XLERATOR, recessing can be an excellent solution. If you are flexible on the dryer model, compare the installation cost and wall work against simply choosing ThinAir, HU02, VERDEdri or another shallow surface-mounted dryer.
Cane-Detectable Guards and Retrofit Solutions
Some manufacturers also offer accessories intended to address protruding-object concerns by extending into the cane-detectable range below the dryer. These can be useful in retrofit situations where recessing the existing dryer is impractical.
The right solution depends on the exact dryer, wall construction and circulation path. Always confirm compatibility and current manufacturer documentation before specifying a guard or recess kit.

What About Hands-In Hand Dryers?
Hands-in dryers demonstrate why depth alone does not determine whether a hand dryer can be used in an ADA-conscious installation. Some hands-in designs are substantially deeper than four inches, but the shape and mounting configuration can place the lower portion of the dryer within the cane-detectable range.
The Saniflow Dualflow Plus is one example of a hands-in commercial dryer designed for accessible installations. Projects using this type of dryer should follow the manufacturer's specific mounting and accessibility instructions rather than applying the 4-inch cabinet-depth rule by itself.
ADA Compliant vs. Handicap Accessible
The phrases are often used interchangeably, but they are not quite the same thing.
Accessibility is the broader question of whether a person with a disability can approach and use the dryer. ADA compliance means satisfying the applicable requirements of the ADA Standards for the facility and installation.
A shallow dryer does not automatically answer questions about accessible reach or clear floor space. Likewise, a dryer that is easy for a wheelchair user to operate is not necessarily compliant with every other applicable ADA requirement.

Before choosing a model, consider the installation as a whole:
- Is the dryer located along a circulation path?
- How far will the finished installation project from the wall?
- Can the dryer be approached from the required clear floor space?
- Are required operable parts within the applicable reach range?
- Does the manufacturer provide an accessible mounting recommendation for the exact model?
- Would a shallow surface-mounted dryer be easier than recessing a deeper model?
- Do state, local or project-specific accessibility requirements add anything beyond the federal ADA Standards?
