XLERATOR Hand Dryer Buying Guide: Advice From More Than 20 Years of Selling Them
There are a lot of ways to configure an XLERATOR, and that is both a strength and a source of confusion. Heat or no heat? White BMC or metal? HEPA or no HEPA? 110-120V or 208-277V? Surface mounted or recessed? The right answer depends on the building, the number of dryers, the electrical plan, the restroom design, and the people who will use them.
Our goal on this page is not to make every option sound equally good. It is to explain what we actually recommend after more than two decades of selling commercial hand dryers and many tens of thousands of XLERATOR units.
The Short Answer
For the lowest purchase price and lowest electrical demand, start with the XL-BW-ECO. For one or two dryers where user comfort matters, consider spending a little more for the heated XL-BW. For larger projects such as schools, universities, stadiums, and other multi-dryer installations, XLERATOReco becomes especially attractive because of its lower amperage and installation-cost advantages.

Heated XLERATOR vs. XLERATOReco: Which One Makes More Sense?
The basic choice is simple. The standard XLERATOR with heat adds a heating element for warmer air. The XLERATOReco eliminates the heating element and lowers electrical demand.
For a restaurant, office, small business, rest area, or another project needing only one or two dryers, we often suggest the heated version. Most people prefer warm air, and the difference in purchase price may be small enough that comfort wins.
For a larger project, the math changes. XLERATOReco draws roughly 4.3-4.5 amps at 110-120V, and Excel Dryer notes that multiple ECO units can be installed on one circuit when the electrical design and local code allow it. That can reduce panel demand, circuit count, wiring, and labor across a large rollout. For schools, universities, stadiums, arenas, and other facilities buying many dryers, those installation and operating savings can matter more than heated air.
ProDryers Tip
Do not choose ECO just because the name sounds greener, and do not choose heated just because it costs more. Think about how many dryers are being installed, the available electrical service, installation cost, climate, and the user's preference for warm air.
Why ProDryers Stocks the 1.1-Inch Noise-Reduction Nozzle
Noise is the number-one concern we hear about high-speed hand dryers. That is why ProDryers began stocking the XLERATOR with Excel Dryer's 1.1-inch noise-reduction nozzle as soon as the option became available.
Excel Dryer's current product sheet says the 1.1-inch nozzle reduces sound by about 9 dB and increases the manufacturer's test dry time by approximately 3 seconds compared with the standard 0.8-inch nozzle. In our real-world experience, customers do not perceive the extra few seconds as a meaningful sacrifice. We have offered the standard nozzle free to customers who prefer it, and we cannot recall a customer ever asking us to switch back.
Some sellers ship the louder standard nozzle and include the quieter nozzle separately. We prefer to make the quieter configuration the starting point so the customer is not paying an electrician or installer to change a nozzle after the dryer reaches the jobsite.
Should You Add HEPA Filtration?
Our current recommendation is straightforward: if the budget allows, we like HEPA filtration. Hospitals, healthcare facilities, and projects with formal filtration requirements are the most obvious applications, but HEPA is not limited to those environments.
Excel Dryer's current electrostatic HEPA system is rated to remove 99.999% of viruses and 99.97% of potentially present bacteria at 0.3 microns from the airstream. HEPA can be ordered factory-installed on many XLERATOR configurations, and existing XLERATOR units can also be upgraded with a HEPA retrofit kit.

A common misconception is that HEPA dramatically increases the price of an XLERATOR. That is not always the case. Ask us for a quote on both configurations. We work hard to keep the HEPA premium as low as possible, and the difference may surprise you.

The dryer underneath is only part of the decision. XLERATOR gives you an unusually broad range of cover materials, colors, and custom-image options.

Do You Need a Metal Cover for Vandal Resistance?
Usually, no. This is one of the most common misconceptions we see. Excel Dryer's white BMC cover is a reinforced thermoset resin developed for commercial use and described by the manufacturer as very resistant to vandalism. Metal covers are also extremely durable, but a school or public facility does not automatically need stainless steel or chrome simply because vandalism is a concern.
Choose the finish based on budget, appearance, cleaning preferences, and the facility. Many buyers still feel more comfortable with metal in tough environments, and that is perfectly reasonable. We just do not want a buyer assuming BMC is a lightweight consumer plastic. It is not.
Our Favorite XLERATOR Configurations for Schools
For a large school project, we usually begin with XLERATOReco because the lower electrical demand can save money both during installation and over the life of the dryers. From there, the cover choice is mostly about budget, cleaning, and design.

Kids tend to touch restroom surfaces more than adults, so cleanability can matter as much as vandal resistance. BMC is durable, but some schools prefer a smooth metal finish because it is easier to wipe down repeatedly.
Custom XLERATORs for Restaurants, Bars, Schools, and Branded Spaces
If we were putting an XLERATOR in our own restaurant or bar, we would strongly consider making it custom. A sports bar could use its logo, team colors, a baseball player, boxing gloves, a local landmark, or imagery tied directly to the theme of the business. Schools can use mascots and school colors. Companies can turn the dryer into another branded touchpoint.

ADA Installations: When to Use the XLERATOR Recess Kit
A standard surface-mounted XLERATOR projects more than four inches from the wall. When the project requires the 4-inch ADA protrusion limit, the normal XLERATOR solution is an ADA recess kit. Recessed XLERATOR installations are common for us. Roughly 10% of the XLERATOR dryers we sell are paired with recess kits.
Always follow the current mounting-height and installation instructions for the exact project. ProDryers does not perform installation work, and ADA compliance depends on the complete installation, not simply the dryer model.
Replacing a Recessed Paper Towel Dispenser? Consider the XChanger
The XLERATOR XChanger Combo Kit is one of our favorite retrofit accessories because it lets a facility convert the opening left by a recessed paper towel dispenser and waste receptacle into a clean XLERATOR installation. An ADA-height XChanger configuration is also available.
XLERATOR Wall Guards: An Accessory We Actually Like
We like XLERATOR wall guards. They protect the wall from water droplets blown off wet hands, but they also make the installation look more finished. White, black, and stainless options can coordinate with many common restroom designs.
For a high-traffic restroom or a wall surface that shows water spots easily, a wall guard is an inexpensive detail that can make the installation look better over time.
Important: Verify Voltage Before You Order
Do Not Guess the Voltage
Voltage mistakes are rare, but they can be expensive. Have your electrician confirm what the building is wired for before ordering. Connecting an XLERATOR to the wrong electrical supply can damage the dryer and may void warranty coverage. Once an electrical product has been installed, it also cannot be treated like an unopened return.
Our product pages use selectable voltage options because that is much easier for shoppers than listing every voltage variation as a separate product. In XLERATOR model numbers, a V generally identifies the higher-voltage configuration. For example, XL-BW is the 110-120V version and XL-BWV is the 208-277V version. Adjustable Speed, Sound, Heat, and Sensor Settings: Do You Need to Change Them?
Most customers leave the factory settings alone. That is what we generally recommend unless the facility has a reason to change them.
The value of adjustability is that it gives one dryer much more flexibility. Years ago, we worked with a church where the hand dryer noise was interfering with the choir. The XLERATOR could be adjusted to create a softer, quieter drying experience, and the church was happy with the result. That is a much better example of why adjustable settings matter than simply listing them on a spec sheet.
Older XLERATOR models may not have the same adjustment controls built in, so confirm the specific generation when servicing an existing dryer.
XLERATOR Maintenance: What Owners Actually Need to Do
XLERATOR is a low-maintenance commercial dryer, but low maintenance does not mean no maintenance. Keep the sensor and air inlet clean, periodically inspect the inside of the dryer, and remove dust or debris as needed. Excel Dryer recommends periodic inspection and cleaning, with more frequent attention in dusty or extremely high-use environments.
For HEPA-equipped dryers, the washable pre-filter should be inspected and cleaned as needed. Excel Dryer recommends replacing the HEPA filter approximately every 6-12 months depending on usage and operating conditions.
Always disconnect power and follow the manufacturer's service instructions. Electrical service and internal maintenance should be performed by qualified personnel where required.
Before You Replace an Older XLERATOR, Ask About a Subassembly
An older XLERATOR does not automatically belong in the trash just because an internal component eventually fails. If the cover is still in good condition, ProDryers can often supply an XLERATOR subassembly replacement kit for much less than replacing the entire hand dryer. The replacement subassembly gives the existing cover a second life while replacing the internal mechanism. Excel Dryer also continues to make motors, sensors, controls, filters, and other XLERATOR replacement parts and accessories available.
XLERATOR Reliability: What We Have Actually Seen
ProDryers has sold XLERATOR dryers since about 2006 and has sold many tens of thousands of XLERATOR units. Over that history, we have averaged fewer than five XLERATOR warranty calls per year. That is our own sales and support experience, not a laboratory failure-rate study, but it is one of the main reasons we remain so confident recommending the product.
Excel Dryer originally backed XLERATOR with a shorter warranty and at times offered longer warranty coverage on select large projects. Today, current XLERATOR literature lists a 7-year limited warranty. The product is also Made in USA Certified.
Why That Matters to Us
A commercial hand dryer should be serviceable years after the sale. With XLERATOR, replacement parts, internal subassemblies, technical support, and a real manufacturer remain available. That long-term serviceability is part of the product, even though it never appears in a dry-time chart.
When Would We Not Recommend an XLERATOR?
A library is a good example. Restroom traffic may be relatively low, while silence can be unusually important. In that environment, we might recommend staying with paper towels instead of installing any high-speed hand dryer.
That is an important distinction. We sell hand dryers for a living, but a hand dryer is not automatically the right solution for every single restroom. If the environment has an unusual noise, accessibility, installation, or usage requirement, tell us before ordering.
Why Buy an XLERATOR Instead of a Cheap Marketplace Hand Dryer?
If you want the original high-speed hand dryer, Made in USA Certified, proven to perform, designed to be repaired, and supported by an established manufacturer, the XLERATOR is difficult to beat.
There are inexpensive hand dryers sold through online marketplaces, and the initial price can look attractive. But a commercial hand dryer is equipment you may expect to operate for years. If something fails after the marketplace return period is over, the important questions become: Who manufactured it? Can you contact them? Will the warranty be honored? Can you buy a motor, sensor, control, filter, or complete internal subassembly years later?
With XLERATOR, those questions have good answers. Warranty issues have been extremely uncommon in our experience, but when service is needed, both ProDryers and Excel Dryer are here to guide you. Even after the warranty period ends, repair parts remain readily available.
We also want to be clear that this is not a criticism of every competing commercial brand. ProDryers sells and supports other established hand dryer manufacturers too. The distinction we care about is buying professional commercial equipment from a real hand dryer manufacturer and a distributor that specializes in the category.

Excel Dryer offers many valid combinations, which is why a buyer may search for a model such as XL-GRV, XL-BWVH, XL-SPVH, or XL-SBH-ECO and then wonder why that exact SKU is not displayed as a separate ProDryers product card. We intentionally use product options for voltage, HEPA, and other configurations so shoppers do not have to sort through dozens of nearly identical product pages.

What is the most popular XLERATOR at ProDryers?
The XL-BW-ECO is our most popular configuration, largely because it is the lowest-priced XLERATOR-family option. For one or two dryers, we often suggest comparing it with the heated XL-BW because many users prefer warm air.
Should I buy the heated XLERATOR or XLERATOReco?
For smaller installations, the heated XLERATOR is often worth considering for user comfort. For larger projects, XLERATOReco can reduce electrical demand, energy use, and potentially installation cost because multiple ECO units may be able to share a circuit when the electrical design and local code allow it.
Does ProDryers recommend HEPA on an XLERATOR?
Yes, when the budget allows. We especially recommend HEPA for hospitals and healthcare environments, but it can make sense anywhere filtered intake air is preferred. Ask us to quote HEPA and non-HEPA configurations because the price difference may be smaller than expected.
Why does ProDryers stock the 1.1-inch nozzle?
Noise is the most common concern we hear about high-speed dryers. The manufacturer says the 1.1-inch nozzle lowers sound by about 9 dB while adding approximately three seconds to test dry time. In our experience, customers do not notice the extra few seconds enough to want the louder standard nozzle back.
Is the XL-BW BMC cover vandal resistant?
Yes. The white BMC cover is reinforced thermoset resin designed for commercial use and is highly vandal resistant. Metal finishes can still be preferred for appearance, cleanability, or buyer comfort, but metal is not automatically required for a durable school or public-restroom installation.
How do I make an XLERATOR ADA compliant?
When the 4-inch wall-protrusion requirement applies, use the XLERATOR ADA recess kit and follow the current installation requirements. Roughly 10% of the XLERATOR dryers we sell are paired with recess kits.
What is the XChanger kit used for?
The XChanger is designed for converting an existing recessed paper towel dispenser and waste-receptacle opening into a finished XLERATOR installation. Standard and ADA-height configurations are available.
Are XLERATOR wall guards worth buying?
We think so. They protect the wall from water droplets and can give the installation a more finished appearance. White, black, and stainless versions are available.
Can I repair an older XLERATOR instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. Replacement parts are readily available, and if the cover is still in good condition, a complete internal subassembly can be a much less expensive way to renew the dryer.
How long is the XLERATOR warranty?
Current XLERATOR product literature lists a 7-year limited warranty. Incorrect installation or electrical supply can damage the dryer and may affect warranty coverage, so verify voltage before ordering and follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.
Is XLERATOR made in the USA?
XLERATOR is Made in USA Certified. That matters to many of our school, government, contractor, and commercial buyers and is one of the reasons the product remains a major part of our hand dryer business.
