ASI 3551-P Swing-Up Grab Bar, Exposed Flange, Peened

The ASI 3551-P is a surface-mounted swing-up grab bar with an exposed 1-1/2" O.D. flange and a peened, non-slip gripping surface. The 1-1/2" diameter tubing is type 304, 18-8 stainless steel with a satin finish.

Features and operation

  • The mounting bracket is 7-gauge plate with six 5/16" mounting holes.
  • A 1-1/2" diameter tubing hinge rides on a solid bar axle with twin torsion-spring counterbalance.
  • The vertical-position gravity lock must be manually released to lower the bar; raising it from horizontal automatically locks it upright.
  • A tamper-resistant set screw lets the owner lock the bar in the vertical position. A plastic end cap cushions contact with the wall plate.
  • ASI states its grab bars are designed to meet and exceed 2010 ADA Accessibility Standards and ANSI A117.1 strength criteria for a 250 lb load. Wall anchorage and the fastener system are critical to supporting that load.

Installation and upkeep

Install at concealed anchor plate or blocking provided before wall finishing, and fasten the wall plate with appropriate hardware. The anchor or blocking and mounting hardware are not supplied and must be specified separately. For the manufacturer’s 2010 ADA installation guidance for adult use, position the top of the horizontal bar 33"–36" above finished floor; confirm the anchorage and mounting configuration against project documents and local codes.

The owner should periodically inspect operation and arrange repairs as needed, including when adverse environmental conditions affect the unit. The mounting and fastener system must be adequately sized for the loads imposed on the wall.
