ASI 3420-P Swing-Up Grab Bar with Support Leg

The ASI 3420-P is a surface-mounted swing-up grab bar with an exposed flange, support leg, and peened gripping surface, for installations where the bar must fold up when not in use. The 1-1/4-inch-diameter top bar is Type 304 (18-8) stainless steel with a satin finish.

Bar features and operation

• A 1-1/2-inch hinge provides detent stops at full up, 45 degrees raised, and full down.
• Polymer bearing plates support quiet, smooth movement; a polymer bumper at the bar end helps prevent banging when the bar is lowered.
• The bar operates with one hand. The support leg automatically retracts into storage when the arm is raised.
• The quick-set lock pin selects the support-leg length for the chosen mounting height.

Wall preparation and mounting

Provide concealed anchor plate or blocking before wall finishing. Fasten the mounting plate through all six holes using appropriate hardware; anchors and hardware are not supplied. ASI states that its grab bars are designed to support a load in excess of 250 pounds, but the wall attachment is critical: the fastener system and mounting must withstand the resulting loads. The manufacturer's adult-use installation guidance for the 2010 ADA Accessibility Standards places the top of the horizontal bar 33–36 inches above finished floor; this is installation guidance, not a guarantee of compliance for a particular installation.

Determine the support-leg length with the quick-set pin before bolting the unit tight to the wall. The manufacturer states that balance tension is preset and does not require adjustment; it also assigns the owner responsibility for periodic inspection and repairs needed due to adverse environmental conditions.
