ASI 3513 Swing-Up Grab Bar, Exposed Flange

The ASI 3513 is a surface-mounted swing-up grab bar for installations that need a manually raised support bar. It has 1-1/2-inch-diameter Type 304 stainless steel tubing with a satin finish and an adjustable friction sleeve balance. Its mounting plate requires concealed blocking or an anchor plate, supplied by others.

Specifications and operation

  • 18-gauge tubing; welded construction with a 9-gauge (5/32-inch) mounting plate and seven 1/4-inch mounting holes.
  • Operates with one hand: lower the bar manually to horizontal for use, then raise it for departure. Adjustable tension helps prevent the raised bar from dropping.
  • A top arm stop bumper limits contact with the wall when raised; a plastic end cap cushions contact with the wall plate in the use position.
  • The manufacturer states the grab bar is designed to meet or exceed the 2010 ADA Accessibility Standards and ANSI A117.1 strength criteria for fabricated product to support a load exceeding 250 lb. Wall mounting is critical: the fastener system must be sized for the generated shear, tension/pullout and torsion loads.

Installation and adjustment

Provide concealed blocking or an anchor plate before wall finishing. Fasten the wall plate through all seven mounting holes using appropriate hardware, which is not supplied. Install the supplied top arm stop bumper in the top-center mounting hole. Manufacturer installation guidance for adult use referencing the 2010 ADA Accessibility Standards places the top of the horizontal bar 33–36 inches above the finished floor; follow applicable local requirements as well. The owner can adjust balance tension by tightening or loosening the hex-head clamp bolt. Periodically inspect operation and adjust or repair as needed, since use may loosen tension over time.
