Dyson Airblade vs. Excel Dryer XLERATOR

A practical, spec-based comparison for architects, designers, contractors and commercial facilities

Excel Dryer XLERATOR vs Dyson Airblade hand dryers

Comparing Dyson Airblade with Excel Dryer XLERATOR requires more than comparing brand names. Drying method, energy use, electrical load, wall projection, filtration, sound, installation and the way people actually use the dryer all matter.

The Short Answer

There is no universal winner between Dyson Airblade and XLERATOR because the products solve somewhat different problems.

Dyson Airblade is strongest when you want the distinctive Airblade drying experience, a shallow hands-under design such as HU02 or HU03, or an integrated Wash+Dry installation. XLERATOR is especially compelling when fast drying, configuration flexibility, Made-in-USA manufacturing, adjustable airflow and broad commercial installation options are priorities.

Which Models Are We Comparing?

Dyson and Excel Dryer each offer several designs, so a meaningful comparison needs to be model-specific rather than treating every dryer from each manufacturer as interchangeable.

Dyson Airblade

HU02 Airblade V - compact hands-under dryer

HU03 Airblade 9kJ - energy-focused hands-under dryer

AB14 Airblade dB - iconic hands-in dryer

Wash+Dry - integrated faucet and hand-drying system

Excel Dryer

XLERATOR - high-speed dryer available with or without heat

XLERATOReco - no-heat, lower-power configuration

ThinAir - shallow-profile commercial dryer

XLERATORsync - sink-integrated drying system

Why we frequently use XLERATOReco with HEPA as the Dyson comparison: Dyson's current Airblade models do not rely on a conventional resistive heating element. Comparing them with the no-heat XLERATOReco configuration provides a more useful baseline for electrical load and energy discussions.

Core Design Difference: Airblade vs. High-Speed Airflow

Dyson built the Airblade line around narrow sheets of high-speed air that physically remove water from the hands. The user experience feels different from a traditional hand dryer because water is effectively pushed or scraped away by concentrated airflow.

XLERATOR takes a different approach. It uses powerful focused airflow directed from a conventional hands-under dryer body. The standard XLERATOR can use heated or unheated operation depending on configuration, while XLERATOReco is designed as a no-heat, lower-power version.

Neither drying method automatically makes one brand better for every restroom. The right choice depends on how the dryer will be used and installed.

Specifications can vary by voltage, operating mode and configuration. Always confirm the exact technical sheet for the model being specified.

Dyson AB14 vs. XLERATOR Eco

The Dyson Airblade dB AB14 and XLERATOR Eco can both serve busy commercial restrooms, but the user experience is very different.

The AB14 is Dyson's recognizable hands-in Airblade. Users lower their hands into the drying chamber and withdraw them through sheets of high-speed air. Its design is visually distinctive and can become part of the overall restroom experience.

XLERATOR Eco uses a more conventional hands-under interaction. Its advantages include lower connected wattage, adjustable airflow, multiple cover choices and the ability to use a recess kit where appropriate.

ProDryers perspective: Choose AB14 when the distinctive hands-in Airblade experience is an important part of the project. Choose XLERATOR when installation flexibility, configuration choices and traditional hands-under operation are higher priorities.

Dyson HU02 vs. XLERATOR Eco

The Dyson Airblade V HU02 is probably the most direct Dyson alternative to a conventional wall-mounted high-speed dryer.

Its biggest physical advantage is its approximately 4-inch wall profile. That shallow design makes HU02 particularly attractive where wall projection and circulation paths matter.

XLERATOR Eco is deeper, but it provides substantially more configuration flexibility. Airflow can be adjusted, several cover materials and finishes are available, HEPA can be specified, and a recess kit can be incorporated when wall projection needs to be reduced.

For many large installations, XLERATOR Eco's lower connected load can also matter because electrical capacity and the number of dryers that can be accommodated on a circuit may become a significant project consideration.

Dyson HU03 Airblade 9kJ vs. XLERATOR Eco

The Dyson HU03 Airblade 9kJ is the most energy-focused current Dyson wall-mounted Airblade.

HU03 operates at approximately 650W in Eco mode and 900W in Max mode. Eco mode trades a slightly longer rated dry time for reduced electrical consumption, while Max mode prioritizes faster drying.

XLERATOR Eco operates at approximately 425-530W depending on voltage. It therefore has an even lower connected load in many configurations while retaining an approximately 10-second published dry time.

The tradeoff is physical depth. HU03 has a shallow approximately 4-inch profile, while XLERATOR's standard wall-mounted body projects farther from the wall unless a recess solution is incorporated.

Energy Use and Electrical Planning

For large commercial projects, we recommend looking beyond estimated pennies per dry. Connected load, circuit availability and the number of dryers required can have a much greater impact on installation planning.

Dyson HU02: approximately 1,000W.

Dyson HU03: 650W Eco / 900W Max.

Dyson AB14: approximately 1,000W.

XLERATOReco: approximately 425-530W depending on voltage.

XLERATOReco's lower amperage can be particularly useful on projects requiring multiple dryers. Depending on voltage, circuit design and applicable electrical requirements, the lower load may allow more units to be planned without the electrical demand associated with conventional heated dryers.

The standard heated XLERATOR is a different configuration and should not be confused with XLERATOReco. Customers who prefer warm air or the traditional heated XLERATOR experience may still choose the standard model.

ADA, Wall Projection and Installation

Accessibility should never be reduced to a single product label. The complete installation matters, including mounting height, wall projection, circulation paths and surrounding fixtures.

Dyson HU02 and HU03

Both have shallow wall-mounted profiles of approximately four inches, making them easier to coordinate where protruding-object requirements are important.

Dyson AB14

The AB14 is a wall-mounted hands-in dryer with a deeper drying chamber. Dyson provides installation guidance for cane-detectable placement. Final accessibility compliance depends on mounting height, location, circulation path and applicable project requirements.

XLERATOR

XLERATOR has a deeper standard wall profile. An optional recess kit can reduce projection where wall construction and project design allow it.

ThinAir

At approximately 3 15/16 inches deep, ThinAir is specifically attractive where a shallow wall-mounted hand dryer is a leading project requirement.

HEPA Filtration

HEPA is standard across current Dyson Airblade models discussed here. Excel Dryer offers HEPA-equipped configurations of XLERATOR and ThinAir, including factory-installed options.

For a fair filtration comparison, make sure the specific XLERATOR model being quoted includes the HEPA option. A standard XLERATOR without HEPA is not equivalent to a Dyson model that includes filtration as standard.

Sound and Airflow Adjustment

Manufacturer sound figures are difficult to compare perfectly because measurement methods and test environments differ.

One useful distinction is adjustability. XLERATOR allows airflow to be tuned, and the optional 1.1-inch noise reduction nozzle can further alter sound and airflow characteristics. This gives designers and facility managers more control over the performance/noise balance.

Dyson models are designed around specific operating modes rather than the same degree of field airflow adjustment. HU03 does provide Eco and Max modes, which change power, drying time and operating characteristics.

Manufacturing and Product Configuration

Excel Dryer manufactures XLERATOR in the United States. That is a meaningful differentiator for projects where domestic manufacturing is an important specification or purchasing consideration.

XLERATOR also offers an unusually broad range of covers, colors, finishes and custom graphics. That makes it easier to coordinate dryers with school colors, branding, architectural finishes or other restroom design requirements.

Dyson takes a more tightly controlled product-design approach. The available finishes and configurations are narrower, but the product itself delivers the distinct industrial design associated with the Airblade line.

Dyson Wash+Dry vs. XLERATORsync

Sink-integrated dryers belong in a separate design category because they introduce plumbing, basin design and countertop requirements that conventional wall-mounted dryers do not.

Dyson Airblade Wash+Dry

Current ProDryers configurations include WD04 Short and WD06 Wall. The former WD05 Tall model is discontinued on ProDryers.

The system combines faucet and hand drying at the basin. Basin geometry, material, plumbing, electrical service and installation clearances must be coordinated during project design.

XLERATORsync with D|13 Sink System

XLERATORsync integrates hand drying directly into a coordinated sink system rather than using a separate wall-mounted dryer.

The D|13 system incorporates the basin, drying equipment and concealed components into a coordinated architectural solution.
