Why Hand Drying Is Part of Hand Hygiene
Handwashing gets most of the attention, but drying is part of the same process. Research has repeatedly found that residual moisture on hands can increase the transfer of microorganisms to surfaces after washing.
That means a hand-drying system needs to accomplish a deceptively simple job: help people get their hands thoroughly dry after washing.
Speed matters because people do not always stand in a restroom until a slow dryer finishes the job. A dryer can perform well in a laboratory, but if users walk away with damp hands because the process takes too long, the real-world result may be different.
How Dyson Airblade HEPA Filtration Works
One of the defining hygiene features of the current Dyson Airblade hand dryer lineup is HEPA filtration.
Dyson currently specifies sealed HEPA filters across its Airblade range. According to Dyson's current U.S. technical information, those filters capture 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns from the restroom air passing through the filtration system before that air is used for drying.
That distinction matters. A HEPA filter does not sterilize the restroom, disinfect a user's hands or make every particle disappear from the surrounding environment. Its job is to physically capture particles from the air moving through the dryer.
What HEPA Filtration Does and Does Not Mean
- It does: filter particles from air drawn through the dryer.
- It does: provide filtered air for the hand-drying process.
- It does not: disinfect hands that were inadequately washed.
- It does not: sterilize the entire restroom.
- It does not: mean maintenance can be ignored.
- It does not: by itself settle the broader paper towel versus hand dryer hygiene debate.
Dyson also provides replacement HEPA filters for its current Airblade platforms. Filter life varies with usage and environmental conditions, so maintenance remains part of hygienic operation.
Touch-Free Operation and Fast Drying
Current Dyson Airblade dryers use automatic sensor activation. Users do not need to push a start button after washing their hands.
That is useful because reducing unnecessary contact with shared restroom surfaces is generally desirable after handwashing. Touch-free activation does not make a dryer sterile, but it removes one potential touchpoint from the process.
Drying speed is another part of the design. Depending on the Airblade model and operating mode, Dyson publishes rated dry times of roughly 10 to 14 seconds.
The practical benefit is straightforward: a fast dryer gives users a realistic opportunity to leave the restroom with thoroughly dried hands instead of abandoning a slow drying cycle early.
What Does Research Say About Hand Dryer Hygiene?
This is where the subject becomes much more complicated.
Studies comparing paper towels, warm-air dryers and high-speed jet dryers have not produced one universally consistent conclusion. Results can change significantly depending on what researchers measure and how the experiment is designed.
Some studies and research reviews have reported less environmental microbial dispersion around paper towels than around high-speed air dryers. Other studies have found jet-air drying to perform as well as or better than paper towels for bacteria remaining on the hands.
More recent research has added still more context. A 2024 study examining aerosolization and transfer after drying found low levels of aerosolization with both jet-air dryers and paper towels and similar limited transfer of the microorganisms studied to surrounding surfaces.
That is why we do not think facility professionals should make a purchasing decision from one alarming headline or one manufacturer-sponsored study.
Older Research vs. Newer Research
Several older studies raised concerns about greater microbial or droplet dispersion from jet-air dryers compared with paper towels. Those findings became widely repeated in news coverage and marketing.
Other experimental work found high-speed jet dryers effective at reducing bacteria remaining on hands, while some trials found no statistically significant hygiene difference among multiple drying methods.
Taken together, the literature supports a more careful conclusion: thorough hand drying matters, individual technologies perform differently, and the answer depends heavily on what outcome is being measured.
Is a Dyson Airblade More Hygienic Than Paper Towels?
We would not make that statement as a universal scientific fact.
Paper towels and Dyson Airblade dryers use fundamentally different approaches. Paper towels remove moisture through absorption and friction. Airblade dryers use high-speed HEPA-filtered air to remove water from the hands.
| Consideration | Dyson Airblade | Paper Towels |
|---|---|---|
| Drying method | High-speed filtered air removes water | Absorption and friction remove water |
| User activation | Touch-free sensor operation | Depends on dispenser design |
| Air filtration | Sealed HEPA filtration | Not applicable |
| Consumable waste | No paper towel waste | Requires ongoing towels and waste removal |
| Research findings | Results vary by study and measurement method | Results vary by study and measurement method |
There are also practical facility considerations that laboratory studies do not always capture. Paper towel dispensers need to remain stocked. Waste bins need to be emptied. Hand dryers need to be kept clean and maintained. Poorly maintained equipment of either type can undermine an otherwise good restroom program.

Hygiene Features Across Current Dyson Airblade Models
The current U.S. Dyson Airblade lineup includes several very different dryer formats, but HEPA filtration and touch-free operation are common themes.
| Model | Drying Format | Rated Dry Time | Hygiene-Relevant Feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airblade V HU02 | Hands-under | Approx. 12 seconds | Touch-free operation and sealed HEPA filtration |
| Airblade 9kJ HU03 | Hands-under | Approx. 10-12 seconds | Touch-free operation, HEPA filtration and Eco/Max modes |
| Airblade dB AB14 | Hands-in | Approx. 12 seconds | Touch-free operation and sealed HEPA filtration |
| Airblade Wash+Dry | At-sink drying | Approx. 14 seconds | Users wash and dry at the basin with HEPA-filtered air |
If you are trying to decide which of these formats fits a particular project, our Dyson Airblade Models Compared guide covers HU02, HU03, AB14 and Wash+Dry in detail.
Choosing a Hand Dryer When Hygiene Is a Priority
We have sold commercial hand dryers since 2003, and one of the biggest mistakes we see is reducing a complex restroom decision to a single specification.
If hygiene is important to the project, we would evaluate the entire system:
- Drying performance: Will people actually leave with dry hands?
- Air filtration: Does the dryer filter the air used for drying?
- Touchpoints: Can users operate the dryer without pressing buttons or touching shared controls?
- Cleaning: Is the dryer easy for custodial staff to wipe down and maintain?
- Filter maintenance: Can replacement filters be obtained and serviced when needed?
- Traffic: Will the dryer handle the number of users expected during peak periods?
- Restroom layout: Where will water be removed from hands, and how does that affect traffic and surrounding surfaces?
- Facility requirements: A school, stadium, restaurant, office and healthcare environment may have very different operational priorities.
What About Healthcare Facilities?
Healthcare environments deserve additional caution because infection-control requirements can be more demanding than those of a typical office, restaurant or retail restroom.
Research reviews have historically differed on the preferred drying method in clinical environments, and facility-specific infection-control policies may dictate what is appropriate. A product's HEPA filter or fast drying time should not override the requirements of the healthcare organization, governing standards or infection-prevention team.
What Does NSF P335 Mean?
Dyson currently identifies the Airblade V HU02 as certified to NSF International Protocol P335.
That protocol is associated with the hygienic performance of commercial hand dryers and includes performance requirements such as drying effectiveness within a defined test procedure.
It is useful supporting evidence for the HU02's tested performance, but it should not be interpreted as proof that every possible Airblade installation is more hygienic than every alternative drying method in every environment.
Do Hand Dryers Spread Germs?
The most accurate answer is: hand drying can move droplets, particles and microorganisms, but the amount and significance depend heavily on the test conditions, drying method and how well the hands were washed beforehand.
Some experimental studies have measured greater dispersion around high-speed dryers than around paper towels. Other research has found limited aerosolization with both methods or favorable bacterial results after jet-air drying.
That does not make either side of the debate meaningless. It means simplistic headlines such as "hand dryers spread germs everywhere" or "paper towels are always less hygienic" go beyond what the complete body of research can support.
The most defensible guidance remains surprisingly basic: wash properly, dry thoroughly and maintain the restroom equipment.

Dyson Airblade Hygiene FAQs
Are Dyson Airblade hand dryers hygienic?
Dyson Airblade dryers are engineered with hygiene-focused features including sealed HEPA filtration, touch-free activation and fast drying. Hygiene in an actual restroom also depends on proper handwashing, thorough drying, cleaning and maintenance.
Do Dyson Airblade hand dryers have HEPA filters?
Yes. Dyson's current U.S. Airblade lineup uses sealed HEPA filtration. Dyson states that its Airblade filters capture 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns from the air passing through the filter before it is used to dry hands.
Does a Dyson Airblade kill germs on your hands?
That is not the purpose of the dryer. Handwashing is responsible for cleaning the hands. The Airblade then removes moisture using high-speed HEPA-filtered air. Proper washing should come before drying.
Is a Dyson Airblade more hygienic than paper towels?
Research comparing paper towels and electric hand dryers has produced differing results depending on the study design and what researchers measured. We would not describe either method as universally superior in every environment. Thorough drying and proper system maintenance are important with either approach.
Do Dyson Airblade dryers spread bacteria or viruses?
Studies of air dryers and microbial dispersion have reached different conclusions. Some experimental studies have measured greater dispersion around high-speed dryers, while other research has found low aerosolization and limited transfer with both jet dryers and paper towels. Test conditions, handwashing quality and the outcomes being measured matter.
Which Dyson Airblade is best when hygiene is important?
All current Dyson Airblade models use HEPA filtration and touch-free operation, so the better choice usually depends on the restroom itself. ProDryers generally favors the compact HU02 for broad commercial use, while HU03, AB14 and Wash+Dry solve different energy, design and installation priorities.
