Emergency Water Heaters

Emergency water heaters must be sized for the fixture load, incoming water temperature and available electrical or steam service. Compare Eemax and Haws eyewash-only, shower/eyewash, indoor, NEMA-enclosed, steam and packaged tempering systems only after defining simultaneous flow, voltage, phase and installation environment.

Eyewash Load or Shower Load?

Choose an eyewash-only or shower/eyewash-combination heater according to the exact connected fixture flow. Do not substitute an eyewash-only model for a shower load without confirming the manufacturer’s sizing data. For multiple fixtures, size from the number that may operate simultaneously and the distance to the farthest outlet.

Electrical Service Is Often the Limiting Factor

Eemax electric tankless models vary by kW, voltage, phase, amperage and turn-on flow. Verify the exact model’s electrical, breaker, disconnect and conductor requirements with the manufacturer and project engineer. Do not choose by kW alone; incoming water temperature and target flow determine the required temperature rise.

Choose the Enclosure and System Format

  • Application family: use Eemax EE models for emergency-eyewash loads and EFD models for emergency shower/eyewash-combination loads; verify the exact model’s flow, voltage, phase and turn-on data.
  • NEMA 4 or NEMA 4X configurations should be selected only when the model’s enclosure rating matches the installation environment and project specification.
  • For Haws 8780/8785 systems, confirm whether the configured application serves single or multiple fixtures and requires looped distribution, optional recirculation or pressure boosting.
  • Steam water heaters are relevant where a suitable steam source is available and the project is designed around that utility.

Data to Gather Before Sizing

Provide the fixture model and flow, number of simultaneous users, incoming cold-water temperature, required outlet temperature, voltage/phase, ambient conditions, pipe length and farthest fixture. For a Haws 8780/8785 looped or multi-fixture project, identify whether optional recirculation or pressure boosting is required.

A Tempering Valve mixes available hot and cold water; it does not replace insufficient heating capacity. For packaged Haws systems, also review Enclosed Safety Showers.
