The Model A had an incredible run. Today, there are much better ways to replace one.

World Dryer A Series hand dryers are still hanging on restroom walls decades after they were installed. But the A Series is now discontinued, and the SLIMdri is no longer the "new" replacement it was when we originally wrote this article.

The right answer depends on what is already in the wall. A surface-mounted Model A, a recessed A Series and an old AirMax are different replacement projects. Before ordering anything, identify the existing dryer, check the electrical supply and determine whether the old unit is surface mounted or recessed.

World Dryer introduced the Model A in 1950. Its heavy cast-metal cover and straightforward design helped make it one of the most recognizable commercial hand dryers in the United States. Many remained in service for decades, which explains why we still get calls from customers trying to identify or replace one.

But the World Dryer A Series is discontinued. The same is true of the older AirMax line. That changes the decision when one of these dryers needs a significant repair.

A functioning Model A does not need to be ripped off the wall simply because it is old. These machines earned their reputation for durability. But if an aging dryer has reached the point where you are paying for parts and labor, replacement gives you an opportunity to improve much more than reliability.

There is no single replacement that makes sense for every legacy World Dryer installation. This is where we would start.

If your existing A Series is surface mounted, the World Dryer SLIMdri can be one of the easiest ways to modernize the installation. SLIMdri was designed so its mounting holes can line up with the older surface-mounted A Series pattern.

That is more important than it may sound. Replacing a commercial hand dryer is not just about the cost of the new dryer. Moving mounting points, repairing tile or other wall surfaces, and dealing with an old recess opening can turn a simple equipment replacement into a much larger project.

SLIMdri also has a much shallower profile than the classic Model A and uses automatic activation rather than the familiar push button.

A recessed A Series is a different situation. Once the old dryer is removed, you cannot simply hang a smaller surface-mounted dryer over the installation and ignore the opening in the wall.

That is the purpose of the World Dryer SLIMdri retrofit kit. It provides a way to transition from the old recessed installation to the shallower surface-mounted SLIMdri while covering the existing recess opening.

Important: This overview is intended to explain how the retrofit works, not replace the manufacturer's installation instructions. Commercial hand dryers are hardwired electrical equipment. Installation and electrical work should follow the current World Dryer documentation, applicable codes and the requirements of the project.

SLIMdri remains useful as an A Series retrofit, but if a customer asks us today which World Dryer we generally prefer, our answer is the World Dryer VERDEdri.

VERDEdri is a more complete modern upgrade. It combines high-speed drying with HEPA filtration, adjustable speed, a shallow surface-mounted profile, universal-voltage capability and a design intended for demanding commercial use.

World Dryer also provides guidance for upgrading legacy Model A installations to VERDEdri, so this is not simply a matter of choosing an unrelated newer dryer.

Replacing an Old World Dryer AirMax

The World Dryer AirMax is also discontinued. If an aging AirMax needs substantial repair, we would generally use that opportunity to compare the installation with the current World Dryer lineup rather than trying to duplicate another discontinued design.

VERDEdri is where we would normally start because it offers a modern high-speed format, shallow wall projection, HEPA filtration and adjustable operation.

Where Does SMARTdri Plus Fit?

The World Dryer SMARTdri Plus offers adjustable motor speed and selectable heat, which can be useful when a facility wants more control over sound, energy consumption and drying performance.

We generally prefer VERDEdri for most replacement projects, but SMARTdri Plus remains an option when its particular combination of controls better fits the application.

Old does not automatically mean bad. The fact that so many A Series dryers survived for decades is evidence of how durable the platform could be.

We also sell commercial hand dryer replacement parts, so we are not going to tell you that every failed dryer belongs in the trash.

If the dryer is relatively recent and needs an inexpensive component, repair can make sense. As equipment gets older, however, the decision becomes less about whether one failed part can be replaced and more about whether continued investment in an aging platform makes financial sense.

For an A Series that has already delivered decades of service, a major repair is a reasonable time to compare the cost of keeping the old dryer alive with the cost and benefits of moving to a current model.

The easiest way to avoid turning a simple hand dryer replacement into a frustrating project is to identify what you have before it comes off the wall.
